mushroom hot chocolate

I love hot chocolate! BUT, after going dairy free I worried I wouldn’t be able to find the same deep, rich, taste that I previously enjoyed. I seriously drink hot chocolate almost every morning now to start my day, and its HEALTHY hot chocolate! 🙂

Here is the method:

mushroom hot cacao

ingredients:

  • 1 can organic coconut milk
  • 1 – 1.5 tbsp raw cacao powder
  • 1/2 tsp reishi mushroom powder
  • 1 tbsp raw honey or maple syrup
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp clove
  • pinch sea salt

instructions:

  1. Put all ingredients into a blender. Blend on high for 2-3 minutes until combined.
  2. Pour into medium sized pot & warm on medium heat until reaches desired heat. While heating, whisk to ensure combined.
  3. Pour into 10 oz mug and enjoy 🙂

You might be wondering why I choose to put cacao and reishi into my hot chocolate rather than just hot chocolate powder or syrup…. I’ll share some of my reasoning!

Benefits of Cacao powder

Cacao is an ancient herb that is grown in south america primarily. It is the original source for chocolate, however, “chocolate” today is now full of dairy, cane sugar, and highly processed, removing all of the benefits originally enjoyed from ancient times. Raw cacao powder is chocolate in it’s most basic form. It is high in antioxidants (at least 14 times more potent than blueberries!), a natural energy-booster (without the jitters of coffee), and it curbs the craving for sweets and chocolate. Although cacao is naturally bitter, with a little bit of a natural sweetener like raw honey, maple syrup, or dates… It tastes better than the real thang!

Benefits of Reishi mushroom

Reishi mushroom is a superfood that has insurmountable benefits for the body. Known as an “adaptogenic herb”, reishi will help to support the immune system by adapting it’s effects to your body’s needs! Because of this attribute, it will help no one person exactly the same way. However, it is known for it’s “calming” effects, specifically known to help reduce anxiety/stress, and help aid in more restful sleep. Reishi is a medicinal mushroom, meaning that it has several other properties that aid in healing… Some include detoxing the liver, regulating immune function, and preventing cancer cell growth. All in all, reishi is a great herb to include in every day life.

*please consult your physician if pregnant or breastfeeding before using reishi mushroom.

SO, with that being said, I love starting my day with an energy boost & healing herb to help aid my body in the healing process. I hope you enjoy this recipe!

Xoxo
